What kind of materials are water slides made of?

Water slides are one of the indispensable parts of the entertainment industry and are produced by combining many materials in terms of safety, durability and aesthetics. In this article, we will examine in detail the materials used in the production of water slides and the properties of these materials.

1. Resin
Resin is one of the most important materials used in the production of water slides and is generally preferred in the GRP (Glass Reinforced Polyester) coating technique. Resins are divided into two main classes:

Bisphenolic Polyester Resin: It provides high chemical resistance against acids and derivatives in acid coatings. For example, the choice of bisphenolic polyester resin is of critical importance in acid coatings.

Isophthalic Polyester Resin: Both isophthalic and bisphenolic resins can be used in water coatings. Isophthalic resin is widely preferred in general water applications.

2. Glass Fibre
Glass fibre is the main material that makes up GRP insulation layers. Different types are used according to the application area:

Glass Felt: Creates a more homogenous surface.

Glass Braid: Provides a more durable structure.

3. Cortel
Cortel is an auxiliary material used in the creation of the bottom floor of water slides. Different types are preferred according to the application area.

4. Cobalt and Peroxide
Two critical chemicals used in resin applications:

Cobalt (Substance A): It is added to the resin mixture considering the ambient temperature and other environmental values.

Peroxide (Substance B): It is used for hardening process before resin and glass fibre application.

5. Aerosil
Aerosil is an additive used in gelcoat production. Provides surface hardness by increasing the density of Celcoat.

6. Celcoat
Celcoat is a gel-like liquid that forms the last insulation layer of water slides. It gives the surface an aesthetic appearance and durability.

7. Pigment
Pigments are used to add colour to the surface of water slides. These colouring pastes are important for both aesthetics and UV resistance.

8. Paraffin
Paraffin is added in certain proportions in celcoat applications to help maintain chemical balance.

9. Styrene
Styrene is used to ensure the fluidity of the resin during application and a stable adhesion.

10. Thinner
Thinner is an auxiliary chemical preferred for cleaning tools and equipment used during production.

Things to Consider in Material Selection for Water Slides

Chemical Resistance: Especially in acidic environments, the choice of bisphenolic polyester resin is critical.

Aesthetic Appearance: Correct application of pigment and celcoat layers improves visual quality.

Durability: The use of materials such as glass fibre and aerosil in appropriate proportions ensures the longevity of the structure.

These materials used in the production of water slides should be carefully selected to ensure both user safety and long-term durability. The right combination of materials ensures that water slides perform at the highest level in terms of both entertainment and safety.
